Michele Benzi is full professor of Numerical Analysis at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa since 2018.
Previously, he held positions at Emory University (2000-2018), at Los Alamos National Laboratory (1997-2000), at CERFACS in Toulouse, France (1996-1997), and at the University of Bologna (1993-1996).
He is a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society, a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, and a member of the Academia Europaea, Mathematics Section (elected in 2019).
He received a Laurea in Mathematics from the University of Bologna and a PhD in Mathematics from North Carolina State University (1993).
He is the author of more than 140 publications concerning different topics in numerical analysis, scientific computing, graph theory, and the mathematical modeling of diffusion and transport processes on complex networks. His most significant contributions include the development and analysis of efficient solvers for large-scale saddle point problems (with applications to fluid mechanics), the study of decay properties in matrix functions (with applications to quantum mechanics), the development of numerical methods for the solution of PDEs posed on metric graphs, and the development of the concept of total communicability, a centrality measure which has found application in disciplines ranging from Chemical Physics to the study of brain networks. He is also interested in the history of numerical analysis.
He is Editor-in-Chief of the SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications (since 2021), and is a member of the Editorial Board of numerous other scientific journals and book series.
He particularly enjoys collaborating with students at both the undergraduate and post-graduate levels and with post-docs.
